Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Gibraltar.

Captured ship: Madoc (master Joseph Allen).

Nationality: American.

History: bound from Richmond, Virginia to Cadiz, laden with flour and peas; taken on 15 June 1813 by HMS Rebuff (Charles Jones commanding), and brought into Gibraltar.

Appellant: 1) the master for the ship and part of the cargo as American property protected from capture on voyages between America and Spain by a HM licence signed by Lord Sidmouth, and a second licence granted by Sir John Borlase Warren, commander-in-chief of HM ships in the America and West Indian station;.

Respondent: The captor and HMPG; 2) Thomas Wilson merchant of London, for part of the cargo on behalf of Samuel Hill of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, deceased, as proteced by a licence granted by said Sir John Borlase v The captor and HMPG.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 20 March 1817 (folios 238-245).

Decision: registrar's report referred back for reconsideration.
