Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of the Bahamas.

Captured ship: Columbia (master Charles Jennison).

Nationality: American.

History: bound from New Orleans to Cadiz (via Havana to repair a leak), laden with flour (under licence of the Secretary for State); taken on 28 or 29 May 1813 by the privateer Swift (Richard Coulson commanding), and brought into Nassau, New Providence.

Appellant: The master and Alexander H Gibbs supercargo for the ship and cargo.

Respondent: The captor.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 20 March 1817 (folios 204-223).

Decision: ship and cargo protected by licence and to be restored as claimed.
