Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of the Cape of Good Hope.

Captured ship: Rose (master Rowland Gardner).

Nationality: American.

History: bound from Canton to Nantucket, laden with teas and silks; taken in January or February 1813 by HMS Harpy (Samuel Hore commanding) and HMS Race Horse (George Frederick Rich commanding), and brought into the Isle de France [Mauritius].

Appellant: Samuel Williams merchant of London, on behalf of Honqua [Howqua] merchant of Canton, a subject of the Emperor of China, for part of the cargo.

Respondent: The captors and HMPG.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 2 May 1816 (folios 366-374).

Decision: goods to be restored as claimed, subect to further proof within 6 months.
