Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Antigua.

Captured ship: Calmar (master Carl Carlsen).

Nationality: Swedish.

History: bound from New Haven, Connecticut, to St Bartholomew, laden with corn, meal, fish, hoops, staves and flour; taken on 19 February 1813 by the privateer Friends (John Allshorn commanding), and brought into St Christopher.

Appellant: William Poston merchant of London for the ship and cargo on behalf of Matthew Winfield as protected by a licence granted by Augustus J Foster HM minister to the USA; and Charles Tottie merchant of London and Swedish consul in Great Britian for the ship and cargo.

Respondent: The captor.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 29 February 1816 (folios 292-297).

Decision: ship and cargo condemned as lawful prize.
