Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Barbados.

Captured ship: Goede Hoop (master Thomas Van Thuysen).

Nationality: Dutch.

History: bound from the Cape of Good Hope via St Helena and Barbados, intending to go to America, Hamburg, Amsterdam or England, laden with wine, brandy, elephant teeth, sea cow teeth [walrus ? ivory], ostrich feathers and rix dollars [specie]; taken on 31 August 1803 by HMS Centaur (James Murray Maxwell commanding), and brought into Barbados.

Appellant: John Carey for the ship and cargo on behalf of himself, Joseph Bray, Hugh Ferrar Venables, Alexander Leith Davidson and Stephen Amyott, all British subjects.

Respondent: The captor.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 7 August 1807 (folios 474-490) [no folio 489].

Decision: against the appeal in respect of the ship; cargo to be restored, subject to further proof in respect of Messrs Bray and Venables.
