Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of the Bahamas.

Captured ship: Harmony (master John Shackford).

Nationality: American.

History: bound from Havana to Baltimore, laden with sugar and molasses; taken on 9 May 1797 by the privateer George and Ophelia (Philip Greenleaf commanding), but because of the neglect and incapacity of the prize master, lost on the sand called the Bahama Bank.

Appellant: The master for the ship, cargo and private adventures on behalf of himself and the crew as American citizens.

Respondent: George Johnson, merchant of New Providence, and owner of the George and Ophelia.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 13 January 1802 (folios 233-243).

Decision: protest overruled.
