Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Tortola.

Captured ship: Hope (master John Robinson).

Nationality: Danish.

History: bound from Surinam to St Thomas, laden with coffee and cotton (with three slaves Bob, Sam and Anthony in the crew); taken on 24 December 1795 by HMS Bulldog (John Hop commanding), and brought into Tortola.

Appellant: John Herdman merchant, on behalf of Thomas Mason of St Thomas.

Respondent: The captor and HMPG.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 23 May 1801 (folios 260-266).

Decision: cargo and slaves to be restored. Folio 260: case and appendix of further proofs on behalf of the appellant; Folios 261-264: appendix; Folio 265: further evidence extracted from processt; Folio 266: decree.
