Administrative / biographical background:

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) was set up on 1 April 1990 as an executive agency of the Department of Transport to promote road safety in Great Britain by setting standards for driving motor vehicles, including motorcycles.

The DSA carried out practical and theoretical tests in driving by employing examiners based at driving test centres throughout Great Britain. The tests were booked and the centres administered by the DSA Regional Offices. DSA was based in Nottingham and the organisation was headed by a Chief Executive and Board. It also administered the statutory Register of Approved Driving Instructors (ADI’s) and supervised the approved training bodies and instructors for basic training of motorcyclists. It was funded by fees received to cover the cost of each activity.

The DSA was amalgamated with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) in April 2014 to form the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
