Administrative / biographical background:

In 1990 the Food Science Laboratory, which was part of Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food’s Food Science Division, moved to a purpose built laboratory in Norwich. Work undertaken there included research into food additives and contaminants, long term work on various compounds which migrate from packaging, including dioxins; veterinary drug residues, trace elements and food authenticity; latterly work on the Food Analysis Performance Assessment Scheme (FAPAS) a food chemical testing service has been carried out by Food Environment Research Agency (FERA) on a sub-contracting basis by the Proficiency Testing Group (PTG). In

1999 the Norwich Food Science Laboratory moved to become part of the Central Science Laboratory (CSL) an executive agency of Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on the Sand Hutton site at York. In 2009 CSL became part of FERA, an executive agency of Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

In 2015 the records were transferred back to DEFRA responsibility when Fera Science Ltd was launched as a private venture.
