This parchment roll of two membranes is an indenture, in English, between Sir John Bunyon, sheriff of Nottinghamshire, and George Palmer, commissary of the archbishop of York, attesting that the former had paid to Sir Edmund Peckham, cofferer of the king's household and receiver of the benevolence known as 'the devotion money', imposed by Henry VIII in 1543 for a crusade against the Turks, the sums of money listed below which had been collected from the various parish churches in the deanery of Bingham, in the archdeaconry of Nottingham, in the diocese of York. The indenture is dated 19 December 1543 and both parties have signed and sealed the roll (although their seals do not survive here) at the end. A few extra payments are recorded on the dorse of m. 1.

The tax was collected in each parish church by the churchwardens, one of whom, in each instance, has either made his mark or signed his name in the left hand margin, against the entry relating to his parish.

The document is mostly legible, although parts of the heading can only be read with the aid of a UV lamp. The document is the counterpart of the better-preserved E 179/64/309 and readers are advised to consult that roll in lieu of this one.
