Title: National Assembly for Wales, Executive and Successors: 2010 Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, Gwent, Wales: Digital and Paper Records
Description:

The records in this hybrid series comprise digital and paper files relating to the Welsh Assembly Government's involvement at the 38th Golf Ryder Cup of 2010, which took place at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, from 1-4 October 2010. The paper files refer to a variety of matters including: bid, planning, appointments, funding, tourism development, marketing, events and economic impact. The digital material relates to similar subjects and activities, also including: internal auditing, issues, outcomes and lessons learnt, briefings, research and development, golf development in Wales, DVDs, videos and images.

The series also contains files relating to the 'Welcome to Wales' event which was held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff two days prior to the event.

Note: A few files have curated titles, which contain the correct file extension, as the original file extension did not reflect the actual file format. No changes have been made to the file.
Date: 1999-2011
Arrangement:

Paper composite files were stored to a classification scheme throughout the whole period and are arranged in departmental file reference order.

The digital material (5,310 files) was created in a variety of standard formats, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook email, PDF, Java Script and web files, video files (VOB) etc. They were stored, up to 2012, on shared drives with unreliable records classification. The latter records had to be discovered using keyword searches on these storage locations. From 2012 digital records were stored on the iShare Electronic Document and Records Management System (Objective version 8) in a reliable records classification scheme which facilitated the identification of relevant records.

References for born-digital records are automatically generated and display a 'Z' after a forward slash, which distinguish them from traditional references allocated to paper and digitised records.

Administrative / biographical background:

There were several contributors to this accumulation of records:

The Wales Tourist Board (WTB) was created in 1969. Until 2005, the main responsibility for tourism laid with the Welsh Tourist Board. In 2006, the WTB was abolished as a separate organisation and brought into the Welsh Government under the name Visit Wales. From 2006 to 2011, Visit Wales was within the Department for Heritage. From 2011 to 2013, it was within Business, Enterprise, Technology and Science. From 2013 to 2015 it was within the Department for Economy, Science and Transport. Major events fell under the Tourism portfolio after 2011.

Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd was established in 2003 by the Welsh Assembly Government to deliver on the public sector commitments contained in the successful Ryder Cup bid. The Welsh Development Agency had previously led the successful bid along with Sir Terry Matthews from the Celtic Manor Resort to host the Golf Ryder Cup in Wales. Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd was run by a board representing the Welsh Development Agency, Wales Tourist Board, the Sports Council for Wales, Newport City Council, Newport Unlimited, the Welsh Golfing Union and the Welsh Ladies Golfing Union. Records created by Ryder Cup Wales Ltd were transferred to the Welsh Government in 2011. The organisation was dissolved in 2014.

The Culture Sport and Welsh Language Division of the Welsh Assembly Government was established in 1999. The varied work of the division included responsibility for the arts, the National Lottery, media, publishing, the National Library of Wales, the National Museum of Wales, sport, the Welsh language, major events and the National Botanic Garden of Wales. In 2008, the division was renamed the Department for Heritage, and included responsibility for tourism and major events. In 2011, the Department for Heritage was renamed the Department of Housing, Regeneration and Heritage, and was placed in the Sustainable Futures Directorate alongside the Environment and Sustainable Development.

The Major Events Unit. The role of this unit was to strengthen Wales' position as an events destination. It also helped to deliver events taking place in Wales. This unit sat within a number of different divisions, departments and directorates over the years. It was initially part of the Culture, Sport and Welsh Language Division, which became the Department of Heritage in 2008. The Major Events Unit was then taken out of the Heritage portfolio in 2011, and transferred to Visit Wales' Tourism and Marketing Branch.
