Administrative / biographical background: |
In 1938 the Diseases of Animals Division of MAFF became the Animal Health Division. In 1965 it was divided into two Divisions, in 1968 into three and finally in 1972 into four Divisions. In 1987 Animal Health Group was reorganised and Division III was renamed Animal Medicines Division. In 1975 a Consultative Panel on Badgers and Tuberculosis was established to bring together the views of experts and interested organisations and to keep the problem of bovine tuberculosis in badgers under review. In 1979 Lord Zuckerman, the President of the Royal Zoological Society, undertook an inquiry into gassing as a method of dealing with the problem. He reported in 1980. In 1984 Professor George Dunnet, a biologist at the University of Aberdeen, conducted a review into the problem of dealing with badgers infected with bovine tuberculosis insofar as it affected the eradication of the disease in cattle, taking into account changes in the field and research work since Lord Zuckerman's review. This report was published in 1986. |
