Custodial history: The Department for Work and Pensions became custodians of the series in 2001 when it replaced the Department of Social Security, 1988-2001. The series was previously held by the Department of Health and Social Security, 1968-1988.

Administrative / biographical background:

Within the Department of Health and Social Security, the Solicitor's Office constituted three separate divisions:

  • responsible for providing advice relating to pensions, benefits, and allowances;
  • responsible for civil and criminal proceedings arising from social security matters; and
  • matters relating to health services and health legislation.

The division responsible for providing legal advice regarding health services was transferred to the new Department of Health Services in 1989.
