Administrative / biographical background:

In 2008, partly due to the credit crunch, the Bradford & Bingley bank was nationalised and in effect split into two parts. All of the bank's retail deposit accounts (along with its branch network) were transferred to Abbey National, itself owned by the Spanish Santander Group. The rest of the business, including the mortgage operation and headquarters, was taken into public ownership by the Government: all shares in Bradford & Bingley were transferred to the Treasury at 8am on 29 September 2008.
