Administrative / biographical background: |
Central Unit of the Built Environment (CUBE) was set up in 1979 with the purpose 'to stimulate and increase concern for all aspects of the built environment in the Department's work'. The Unit was expected to be broadly concerned with urban areas with two main strands to its work: (a) Internal: scrutiny of existing and emerging policies and programmes and the development of longer term studies designed to ensure that DOE initiatives take due account of the likely effect of the built environment; and (b) External: for example, identifying and disseminating examples of good practice in enhancing the built environment, perhaps through award schemes; initiating papers or arranging seminars on particular aspects of the environment. |
