Description:

Captured ship: La Conception, Joseph Denans, master.

History: French merchant ship bound from Toulon and Marseilles to Rotterdam and thence to the Turkish port of Asmierre (Izmir, Smyrna?) laden with cotton, soap, galls etc for delivery to Rotterdam, captured on 11 September 1755 off Portland by the Elizabeth (Lt William Burr commanding) and the Tasker (Lt William Gough commanding) tenders belonging to HMS Royal George and taken into Portsmouth.

  • Court Papers - allegation; examinations; translation and abstract of ship's papers; affidavit of papers from the Secretary of the Commission appointed to sell the several French ships taken before the declaration of war.
  • Ship's Papers - notebook concerning cargo; bills of lading; captain's orders; muster roll; charter party; invoices; bill of health; passport from Marseilles to Rotterdam; playing card (Queen of Spades).
