Benefits Agency Medical Services provided medical advice and guidance to the Attendance Allowance Board, Disability Living Allowance Board and Controlled Medical Boarding (appointing Doctors and setting policies and guidance). They also provided policy and procedures on the Industrial Injuries Scheme, Industrial Accidents, Severe Disablement Allowance, Mobility Allowance Examinations Medical Policy and casework in Sickness, Invalidity Maternity Benefits, Income Support Severe Disablement Allowance (incapacity for work aspects).

The Benefits Agency Medical Services sat within the Benefits Agency. From 1998 responsibility for medical policy advice to the Department of Social Security and its Executive Agencies passed to the Medical Policy Group of the Department of Social Security.
