Administrative / biographical background:

The Petroleum Engineering Division of the Department of Energy was responsible for the assessment of petroleum discoveries and prospects, operations and safety, the organisation of programme approvals, research and development in the exploration and exploitation of the UK Continental Shelf and the diving and pipelines inspectorates. In 1992 the Division became the Petroleum Engineering Directorate within the Oil and Gas Division of the Department of Trade and Industry.
