Description:

Folios 377-378.

To: The General Board of Health.

From: Alfred Dickens, Superintending Inspector, The General Board of Health.

Subject Matter: Report on the completion of the works by the Luton Local Board [Bedfordshire] for the construction of an intercepting sewer and the deodorising works, where costly alterations have been carried out by Mr Bazalgette, and the total cost of the works being £12,702 3s 51/2d. Dickens includes a small sketch of the sewage passing from one tank to the other through pipes. He concludes that the work has made a vast improvement to the town, and has been 'admirably executed' and of the 'superior comfort' to the inhabitants, especially to those employed in the straw manufactories, which must be very great.
