The Committee on Safety of Medicines was constituted under the Medicines Act 1968 s4, and established in June 1970 to advise government health ministers (who are described in the Act as the Licensing Authority) on the quality, efficacy and safety of medicines in order to ensure that appropriate public health standards are met and maintained. It provides advice to the Licensing Authority on whether new products should be granted a marketing authorisation and it also monitors the safety of marketed medicines.

The members include pharmacists, pharmacologists, toxicologists and physicians from a wide range of disciplines working in general practice, hospitals and universities; it also includes two lay members.
