Administrative / biographical background: |
The Economics, Railways and Ports Division was established within the Departments of the Environment and Transport Common Services in 1977. It was responsible for providing economic advice on railways, investment reviews, grants and subsidies, fares and the provision of economic advice on ports and inland waterways. In 1978 the Division was renamed the Economics, Railways, Ports and General Division; it retained its original functions. In 1980 the Division was reorganised and the newly formed Economics, Freight, Ports and General Division took on responsibility for the provision of economic advice on ports together with the provision of economic advice on the road haulage industry and major projects such as the Channel Tunnel. |
