The Dairy Herd Conversion Scheme was an EEC initiative launched in the UK under the Dairy Herd Conversion Premium Regulations 1973. It encouraged farmers to stop the production of milk and to convert diary cattle into beef herds, through the use of grants. The aim of the scheme was to reduce the surplus of dairy produce (known as milk lakes and butter mountains) which appeared in the early 1970s.
