The Vehicles Policy and Systems Division was established in 1974 as part of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Group. Its remit was the development of vehicle policy. In 1976 this function was transferred to the Drivers and Vehicles Policy Division, and in 1977 this division was transferred to the Department of Transport. The following year the function was transferred to the Driver Vehicle Licensing Financial and General Division and in 1981 it was again transferred to the Vehicle Licensing and Regional Division. The latter Division ceased to raise VPS files in 1983.
