Custodial history: Since the file series ceased to accumulate the records have been in the custody of Department of the Environment (1972-1997), the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (1997-2001), the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions (2001-2002) and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (2002 to date).
Selection and destruction information: The records were selected on the basis that they reflect the economic, social and demographic condition of the UK, as documented by the state's dealings with individuals, communities and organisations outside its own formal boundaries (2.2.2.1).

Administrative / biographical background:

Establishment Office Services (EOS) was established in 1971 within the Establishments and Organisation Division. The following year the work of the (EOS) was passed to the Office Services Division within the Directorate of Manpower Resources where it remained until 1978.
