Folios 3-9.

Folios 3-4. Field Marshal George Wade to Duke of Newcastle, advising that, while the [Jacobite] rebels remain near Carlisle [Cumberland], he now intends keeping his forces where they are. Mentions providing shoes for Dutch troops, sending money to General Handasyd [in Berwick upon Tyne, Northumberland, Berwickshire], and Wade mentions his own health. Also mentions Mr Dick, the messenger. Dated at Newcastle [upon Tyne, Northumberland]:

Folio 5-6. Copy of Council of War proceedings, proposing, after a few days' rest, to march via Hallifax [Yorkshire] and Rochdale [Lancashire, Yorkshire] to meet the rebel army in Lancashire and Manchester [Lancashire]. Present: Wade; General Comte de Nassau; General Schwartzenberg; General Lord Tyrawley; General Wentworth. Dated at Newcastle.

Folio 7. Copy of examination of Joseph Tiffin, servant to Mr Bramwell, of Penrith [Cumberland], who describes the rebel army at Rawcliffe [near Carlisle, Cumberland]; strength less than 10,000; 9 pieces of artillery; marching with 'droves of black cattle and sheep; provisions; 10 guinea recruitment offer. Parts of wax seal. Dated at Penrith [Cumberland].

Folio 8. Copies of intelligence from Carlisle, reporting rebels at Stanwix [Cumberland], demanding quarters in Carlisle for 13,000 foot and 3,000 horse, and threatening to burn the town. Dated 9 November 1745. Separate account reports rebels will by-pass Carlisle. Dated 10 November 1745. Copy of intelligence from Apulby [Appleby, Westmoreland] reports rebels expected there, coming via Stainmoor, and already in Penrith. Dated 10 November 1745.

Folio 9. Intelligence of rebel movements towards Carlisle 7-9 [November 1745], mentioning Hawick [Roxburgh], Longholm [Langholm, Dumfriesshire], Cannonby [Canonbie, Dumfriesshire], Longtown [Cumberland], Rockly [Rockley?], Broughside [Brough, Westmoreland?], Moffat [Dumfriesshire], and Rockcliff, [Cumberland]. Mentions Ogilvy's and Glenbucket's regiments. Reports that Charles [Edward Stuart] stayed at 'Hayly haugh', and with David Murray at Ridding. Enclosed in General Handasyd's letter of November 12 1745 [not filed here].
