Description:

This series contains all official documents received and dealt with by the Director or Museum Secretary. It includes administrative and scientific correspondence from the British Museum, government departments, institutions and individuals in Britain and overseas, as well as internal memoranda and reports from the heads of departments within the Museum. Printed and duplicated papers and memoranda on a wide variety of topics are also included. Many items were tabled and discussed at meetings of the Standing Committee of the Trustees.

Arrangement:

Arrangement is strictly chronological, and papers were bound into volumes every few years. From 1921 incoming papers were gathered into subject files and the Reports and Letters series was discontinued.
