Administrative / biographical background:

The Sugar and Tropical Foodstuffs Division was established in 1968. It was responsible for the formulation of general policy on international commodity agreements. This included the international coffee and tea agreements, and trade policy on tropical foodstuffs (excluding citrus products).

In 1973 these functions passed to the Tropical Foods Division which itself became part of the Trade Policy and Tropical Foods Division in 1992. This division was wound up in 2001 following the creation of the new Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and responsibilities for the operational functions went to the Trade Policy Unit of the European Union International Division.
