Administrative / biographical background:

The European Co-ordination division of the Overseas Finance Group was responsible for the co-ordination of the Treasury's policy towards UK membership of the European Community, economic and monetary union and UK relations with the European Development Fund. It lead on four main areas:

  • Policy aspects of the UK contribution to the EC budget and UK participation in systems of financing the budget
  • Co-ordination of advice on EC economic policy including briefing for meetings of the EC's Committee for Short-term Policy Co-ordination and for meetings of the EC Finance Ministers.
  • General co-ordination of the Treasury's response to business conducted in EC economic committees.
  • Co-ordination of the Treasury's response to UK Parliamentary interest in EC matters especially its work scrutinising EC secondary legislation.
