These series contains records relating to various charitable funds that were either administered by HM Customs and Excise and its predecessors or benefited the families of former Customs officers.

Including:

  • William Marsh Charity.
  • Customs and Excise, Orphans, Widows and War Memorial Fund; the records for this charity date from the mid-nineteenth century and reflect its day-to-day running.
  • A small number of papers relating to a various charitable activities; for instance, donations made during the First World War to the Red Cross and the setting up of a charity in honour of Customs men who died in 1934.

Administrative / biographical background:

The William Marsh Charity was named after its benefactor, an eighteenth century Customs Officer who bequeathed money to set up a charity for the benefit of orphans and widows of former Customs officers. In the mid-1990s Customs and Excise decided to merge the William Marsh Charity with the Customs and Excise, Orphans, Widows and War Memorial Fund.

The records were administered by the Family Fund.
