Administrative / biographical background:

The Secretary's department came into being at the same time as the British Railways Board, 1963, and was the direct successor of the Chief Secretary's Department of the British Transport Commission. The department supported the Secretary to the Board in carrying out Board policy and maintaining records for the Board's use.
