The Eastern and Southern Africa Department of the Ministry of Overseas Development was created in 1975 as part of general reorganisation of the departments dealing with aid provision in Africa. Its responsibilities were split in 1979 in a further general reorganisation between the Eastern and General Africa Department and the Central and Southern Africa Department.
