Administrative / biographical background:

The Northern and General Africa Department was created in 1975 when the work of the West and North Africa Department of the Ministry of Overseas Development was split. Responsibility for aid work in Portuguese Africa passed to the Eastern and Southern Africa Department, and for aid work in the Sahel states passed to the West and Central Africa Department in 1976. The Northern and General Department continued until 1979, when its work was redistributed between the Eastern and General Africa Department and the Western and Northern Africa Department.
