Administrative / biographical background:

The Economic Services Division (ESD) was first established in 1968. Originally created to provide a source of economic advice to the Board of Trade, the division was transferred to the Ministry of Technology (1969) and the Department of Trade and Industry (1970). The structure of ESD was divided into six sections (EcS 1-6) comprising four 'mixed economic/statistical divisions, one 'pure' economics divisions, and one 'pure' statistics division. In 1974, when the DTI was split into the Departments of Industry, Trade and Prices and Consumer Protection, the EcS Divisions were transferred to the Department of Industry but continued to provide a common service to all departments.
