Administrative / biographical background:

The UK High Commission in Zomba was established from July 1964, when Malawi attained full independence as a self-governing member of the Commonwealth. The capital of Malawi was moved from Zomba to the new development of Lilongwe in 1975. The High Commissioner's office had already moved from Zomba to the main economic centre of Malawi, Blantyre, in 1971, and was relocated to Lilongwe in 1975.
