Administrative / biographical background: |
The New Hebrides were settled by French and British colonists in the 19th century. The British settlers were under the jurisdiction of the High Commissioner for the Western Pacific from 1807 to 1902, when joint British and French Resident Commissioners were established in Port Vila. A formal Anglo-French Condominium was established in the New Hebrides in 1906, and continued until 1980, when the New Hebrides became an independent republic within the Commonwealth under the name of Vanuatu. The Resident Commissioners worked together to administer the Condominium, but had specific responsibility for those parts of the administration which were provided separately for members of the British and French communities. |
