Administrative / biographical background:

The White Paper on Industrial and Regional Development (Cmnd 4942) published on 22 March 1972 announced the formation of the Industrial Development Executive (IDE) within the Department of Trade and Industry. The IDE's Industrial Development Unit (IDU) was given responsibility for administering support to British industry under the Industry Act 1972 which came into effect later in the year. The IDU became part of the Department of Industry following the dissolution of the DTI in 1974.
