These letters are from the Flag Officer commanding the West Africa Squadron. For much of its history this squadron was subordinate to the Cape of Good Hope Station, whose commander-in-chief enclosed the reports from West Africa with his own (ADM 1/55-86). Reports from Commodore Keppel commanding the 1758 expedition to Senegal are in ADM 1/54; those of other captains operating in these waters before the establishment of the Cape Station in 1795 are among Captain's Letters (ADM 1/1435-2738).
