Selection and destruction information: In 1998 the Home Secretary invited the Advisory Council on Public Records to consider the criteria for selection of Security Service records for permanent preservation. The council recommended the permanent preservation of all policy files (other than those of an ephemeral nature) and of all registers and other means of reference to them.
