Description:

Folio 534. Letter from W E Goodacre, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board. He says that a subscription has been entered into in Mansfield to provide a treat of roast beef and plum pudding to the inmates of the workhouse on Christmas Day instead of the usual diet of the day, according to Article 107 of the General Consolidated Order.

He says that it was suggested to the guardians at their meeting that 'great inconvenience would arise from the treat being given on the Christmas day', so he has been instructed to request the Board to sanction it being given on either 31 December 1852 or 1 January 1853.

Annotated: firstly, to see Article 10 of the Consolidated General Order.

Annotated: secondly, by Mr Manwaring [John Manwaring, Poor Law Board Inspector] that this application should not be allowed. That it seems to him that the guardians are making use of Christmas day in an inexpedient manner. To refer to his observations on a previous document, which has been returned to the office today.

Annotated: thirdly, to decline to sanction the departure on any other day than Christmas day.
