Description:

Folios 368-370. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from Dr Edward Smith, Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Mansfield Poor Law Union Workhouse on 3 July 1866; includes details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards, etc.

In a copy of Dr Smith's entry in the Visitors' Book he recommends single beds for each adult, woollen rugs to be provided, stone sinks to replace the present metal gutters, and 'Jenning's latrines and urinals should be provided instead of the open necessaries in the yard'. He recommends that further ventilation is required, and should be opened.

He recommends the removal of partitions in the present sick wards, which should now be for the able bodied. The women's wards should be raised a storey and used for sick males, and three wards could be provided on each floor. A bathroom should be provided by the W.C. on each floor, also a nurses' room at the east end with stairs to the upper floor. Rooms should be 11 ft high and windows should reach to within one foot of the ceiling. Hot water apparatus in needed in each sick room. New plans and estimates should be sent to the Board.
