Description:

Folios 180-182. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from Edward Smith, Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Mansfield Poor Law Union Workhouse on 16 September 1865; includes details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards, numbers of inmates.

The infirmary is very badly ventilated, and the boys sleep in a stable with stone floors and gutters. The children, being in poor health, should have 1½ pints of milk per day.

A newspaper cutting dated 27 October 1865 is appended, reporting the subsequent visit by the Visiting Committee and their recommendations to the governors on this inspection.
