Custodial history: The series was originally under the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) until 2001, when they became the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). In 2005, the government launched the Marine Fisheries Agency (MFA), as a new Executive Agency. In April 2010, the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) was launched under the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 as a new non-departmental public body (NDPB) the files are currently under their jurisdiction.

Administrative / biographical background:

The series was initially opened in 1985 for Fisheries Division I, Branch 'C' by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. In 1988 this was amended to Fisheries MEP (Marine Environment Protection) and then to RMED (Rural Marine Environment Division), Marine Waters and Marine Environment.
