Administrative / biographical background:

The Eastern and Western Africa Department was formed in 1980, taking over part of the responsibilities of two predecessor departments, Eastern and General Africa Department and Western and Northern Africa Department. Much of the development work carried out in the Eastern and Indian Ocean part of this area was actually performed from the East Africa Development Division office in Nairobi. The department was abolished in 1986, its responsibilities being split between two new departments, Eastern Africa Department, and West and North Africa and the Mediterranean Department.
