Description:

Captured ship: Le Dauphin, Martin Lermet master.

Details: French merchant ship with letter of marque carrying a cargo of wine, brandy and shoes, on a voyage from Bayonne to Louisbourg, when captured by HMS Rochester in company with HMS Somerset and HMS Devonshire, and taken into Portsmouth.

Documents: c 227 personal and business letters from Ciboure, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Bayonne and other places in France to Louisbourg, with a few to Niganiche (Nova Scotia) and Labrador, including 51 in the Basque language which are currently stored separately: please ask to speak to a member of the Prize Papers team if you wish to see them. Also, bill of lading for Le Dauphin, for a voyage from Bayonne to Louisbourg, 24 March 1757.
