Description:

Folios 205-206. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from Dr Edward Smith, Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, following his visit to the Basford Poor Law Union workhouse on 31 July 1866. His main concern is the overcrowding and he notes the dispute between the guardians and the Duke of Newcastle over land which is urgently required for extensions. He adds a copy of the memo left in the visitors' book stating his concerns.

The report on the school has been inserted by Edmund H Wodehouse, who visited on 30 November 1865. James Wilkes and John Forster, Commissioners on Lunacy, had last visited on 16 November 1864.
