Description:

Folios 315-316. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from Dr Edward Smith, Poor Law Board Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Basford Poor Law Union Workhouse on 29 August 1865. The report included details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards and the number of inmates. To the query concerning the number of inmates not in communion with the Church of England, Smith has noted 'no Roman Catholics, 17 Dissenters'. He reports that the old wards are imperfectly lit and ventilated and has suggested improvements. He also notes that there are no separate vagrant wards.

Annotated: there will be sufficient room once the infirmary had been built and, as the Nottingham Workhouse [Nottingham Poor Law Union] is very near and able to take vagrants; a separate vagrant ward is not needed.
