Tweeddale to Cope. On intelligence of the arrival of the Pretender [Charles Edward Stuart] at Atholl, and of the enlistment of the loyal Highland Clans to enter the counties belonging to the rebels to drive off their black cattle and sheep. About the securing of the passes to prevent the enemy from returning to their camp behing the 'forts'. Hoping that the arrival of the Dutch reinforcements and the two regiments of dragoons in the"Low Country" near Perth, would prevent the progress of the rebels into the south country (estimated to be no more than 2,500 strong). Postscript concerns orders for Brigadier Fowkes in Yorkshire to repair immediately to Scotland. |
