Description:

Enclosing letter (24 June) about the abuses in the Highlands and the use of the additional Highland [Independent] Companies to prevent this. Relates to the 'Banditti' from Lochaber and the calling of MacPherson of Clunie by the gentlemen of Nairn to protect their estates. Paying him 'Half a crown in a Hundred pound for his securing them from having their Cattle stolen'. This method being prevalent in the south whereby the Lowlanders pay a tax to the Highlanders [rustlers]. Whereupon they"receive a Reward for their Villany without any danger of being Hanged".
