Title: Ordnance Survey of Great Britain: Administrative Area Diagrams
Description:

Administrative Area Diagrams are maps of local government and other public boundaries in England, Wales and Scotland prepared and published by the Ordnance Survey.

This series contains:

  • Parish boundary maps (1892-1898): half-inch (1:126,720) maps showing parish boundaries in England, Wales and Scotland, together with tables of acreage of land and water in each parish and in the county as a whole. Two types of map were produced, coloured and uncoloured: most of the maps in this series are coloured. Boundaries of Parliamentary divisions are inked on some maps.
  • Administrative Area Diagrams (1899-1979): they show boundaries of Administrative Counties, County and Municipal Boroughs, Urban and Rural Districts, Civil Parishes and, where appropriate, Poor Law Unions and Sanitary Districts. The more recent series of diagrams also show the incidence of County Series maps and the National Grid.
  • Maps showing civil parishes in England, Wales and Scotland (1898-1913), together with tables of acreage of land, water, saltmarsh, foreshore and tidal water in each parish and in the county as a whole. Maps published before 1904 include details of the incidence of one-inch maps.
  • Civil Parishes: six-inch and twenty-five-inch series (1894-1904). These are quarter sheets on Old Series one-inch map sheetlines, with parishes individually coloured, and overprinted to show the incidence of six-inch sheets (ZOS 2/231-586) or twenty-five-inch sheets (ZOS 2/587-942). ZOS 2/943 is an index to these maps. Examples of an earlier series of such maps are in ZOS 2/2151-2162.
  • Maps showing Civil Parishes printed in red on a base map (1917-1934).
  • Maps showing Civil Parishes and Catchment Areas printed in red on a base map. (1932-1946).
  • Administrative and Parliamentary Boundaries (1921-1976): maps similar to Administrative Area Diagrams, often using the same base map, with Parliamentary boundary information overprinted in blue (before 1930) or green. In addition county and municipal boroughs, and urban districts are often shaded in.
  • Scottish Administrative Area Diagrams (1937-1955): maps showing local government and, where indicated, Parliamentary boundaries.
  • Combined Index to Civil Parishes and Ordnance Survey maps (1888-1959): maps showing Petty Sessional boundaries, Municipal Boroughs and Civil Parishes, together with the incidence of County Series six-inch and 25-inch sheets and, where appropriate, the National Grid equivalent.
  • Civil Parishes: one-inch series (1892): these maps are not overprinted with the incidence of six-inch or twenty-five-inch sheets.
  • Boundary Commission maps: maps prepared by the Ordnance Survey for the Boundary Commissions of England, Scotland and Wales in 1947. They are similar to the Administrative and Parliamentary Boundary maps.
