Description:

Folios 528-529. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from John T Graves, Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union Workhouse on 25 April 1865; includes details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards etc. He notes that Miss Sheppard [Elizabeth Sheppard, Schoolmistress], is about to resign from ill health. He also mentions that the clothes of the paupers have been branded with the workhouse mark. The guardians have ordered these marks to be covered over.

Annotated: it is supposed that the places where the vagrants are received and relieved in the union do not afford the conveniences for putting them to work and superintending them in the performance of work.

Also annotated: there are not at present superintendents of labour or conveniences for the tramps to work at these places. JTG [John Thomas Graves, Poor Law Inspector].
